Charles Allison
Charles Allison, age 90, a long time resident of Couderay, Wis., died in Rice Lake on Friday, August 26.
He was born in Missouri, Feb. 13, 1887. He came to Couderay, Wis., in 1928 to make his home. He owned and operated Charley's Tavern in Couderay until 1965 when he retired. He was married June 25, 1965 to Mattie Patterson.
Survivors are his wife, Mattie; one son, Orin Allison of Janesville, Wis.; 7 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Church in Couderay with Rev. Tom Eggebeen officiating. The interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Couderay.
Edward Anderson
Edward Anderson, age 72, well known resident of the Couderay community, died in Hayward on Monday, May 15.
He was born in Lindsey, Nebraska on December 14, 1899. At the age of fourteen years he came to Couderay where he resided for the past 58 years.
For many years he owned and operated a grocery store in Couderay, now known as the Argetsinger's Store.
The past years Mr. Anderson served as a custodian of the local school and was a school bus driver for several years. He took a great deal of interest in athletics for the young people of the community.
On July 10, 1918 he was married to Elizabeth Goodsell in Couderay, Wisconsin.
Survivors are his wife; 4 sons, Russell of Jefferson City, Mo., Delmar of Kenosha, Wis., Gerold (Sam) of Couderay and Gary of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; 11 daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Sis) Keith, Hayward, Mrs. Elmer (Helen) Koepke, Minneapolis, Mrs. Donald (Gertrude) Black, Mrs. Eugene (Mary) Kanymann, Mrs. Frederick (Catherine) Jelinek, Mrs. Norman (Jean) Cody of St. Paul, Mrs. Nick (Mitzi) Boss and Mrs. William (Sue) Rogers, Couderay; Mrs. Robert (Sharon) Biller, Loretta, Wis., Mrs. Gene (Sandra) Christensen, Ashland, Wis., Mrs. Mike (Terre) Sanders, Anoka, Minn.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Ray Dorr and Mrs. Christina Keihn, LeMars, Iowa; 47 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Two sons preceded in death.
Ray Argetsinger
Funeral services for Couderay store owner Ray W. Argetsinger, 69, who died at Shell Lake July 20, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 23, at the Presbyterian Church in Couderay, with Dr. Robert Koenig officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Couderay.
Born March 11, 1909 at Couderay, he attended school at Couderay and was a graduate of Glidden High School. He attended Eau Claire State College, and in 1931, became the owner of Argetsinger's Store, a business he operated until the time of his death.
He was married to Hazel Holmquist at Hayward in 1935, was village clerk for almost 40 years, and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Norman, Couderay; two brothers, Elmer, Park River, N.D., and John, Klamath Falls, Or.; two sisters, Ruth Parkos, Minneapolis, Minn., and Hazel Willy, St. Paul, Minn.; three grandchildren.
The Anderson Funeral Home, Hayward, was in charge of arrangements. Serving as pallbearers were Dale Scharlau, John Block, Herb Block, Chet Poradish, Frank Hoeft and Bernie Rich.
Oscar Bekkedahl
Oscar Bekkedahl, age 95, well-known resident of the Couderay area, died in Hayward on Monday, July 24, 1978.
He was born December 16, 1882 in Stange, Norway. At an early age he came to this country, in 1901 to Westby, Wisconsin, and later moved to Hillsboro, North Dakota where he worked for his uncle in a store. He attended school there and graduated with honors from the high school in Hillsboro.
In 1915 he came to Couderay and worked in the Bekkedahl Store. In 1915 he took over the store and operated it and owned it until 1958 when he retired.
He was married to Martha Haugseth on Nov. 6, 1938 in the First Lutheran Church in Hayward. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Couderay, a past member of Oglivie Lodge No. 326 of Radisson, a past secretary of the Republican party, and he oldest member of the First Presbyterian Church of Couderay.
Survivors include his wife; two brothers, Helge Bekkedahl and Ole Bekkedahl of Stange, Norway; one sister, Anna of Stange, Norway; also nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Couderay with Dr. Robert Koenig of Chippewa Falls and Pastor Ronald F. Pechauer of Hayward officiating. the interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Hayward.
Wenceslaus "Windy" Borrie
Wenceslaus "Windy" Wardell Borrie, 67, of Couderay, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, at his home.
He was born on April 14, 1939 in Green Bay. He moved with his mother to Couderay to be near his grandparents. After his mother and grandfather Harry died when he was only six years old, he was raised by his grandmother Laura. He attended the Couderay and Winter schools and then received a degree from the Barron County Teachers' College. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1962 and served two years in Germany and then 35 years in the Reserves. He was very proud of his time in the service.
After returning from Germany, he went to work for Goldsmith Brothers Metal Refining in Chicago. He was joined in marriage to Mary Hill on April 12, 1969 in Pawnee, Ill. The couple moved to California where he also worked in metal refining. In 1982, they moved back to Wisconsin to the family farmstead where he had spent much of his youth. He worked as a nutrient educator for the UW-Extension program in Sawyer County. He was very involved locally with many activities, including cooking for the Headstart program and serving on the Winter School Board. He loved to collect things having to do with trains and with different types of cooking. Most of all, he loved to visit with people and came by his nickname of "Windy" quite naturally.
He is survived by his wife Mary of Couderay; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, his grandparents, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral: The Mass of Christian Burial was at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Radisson. Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Anderson-Nathan-Koerpel Funeral Home and again on Saturday at the church for one hour prior to the service. Interment: Evergreen Cemetery in Couderay.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army, the USO, or St. Jude Children's Hospital. The Anderson-Nathan-Koerpel Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Steven M. Carryl
Steven M. Carryl, 28, Exeland, died early Saturday, Oct. 11, as a result of injuries received in a one car accident near Exeland.
Steven Michael was born December 16, 1951, the son of Neal B. Carryl and Dorothy Sander. He was a 1970 graduate of Winter High School and a Viet Nam Army veteran. He received his associate degree from Rice Lake Vocational Technical School and attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout at Menomonie. On December 4, 1976 Steven was married to Lori Boss at Couderay.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Adam; his mother, Dorothy Tate of Exeland; two brothers, Jim Tate of Exeland and Neal (Butch) Carryl of Jackson, WY; two sister, Jennifer Tate of Exeland and Sheryl McFadden of Tonapah, AZ; his maternal grandmother, Luzenia Sander of Couderay; and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 13 from St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Couderay, Rev. Fr. Francis Pakosta was the celebrant. Burial was at the Couderay Cemetery with military rites accorded by the Radisson Post #297. Visitation was held Sunday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Hayward with a Bible Vigial Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m.
Casket bearers were Art Hemminger, Tom Mapes, Bruce Cody, Rocky Aken, Sam Clements and Lou Seffinga.
Jocyne Clements

Jocyne F. Clements, 64, Exeland, died on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN.
Jocyne Frances was born on Jan. 23, 1937 in Chippewa Falls, WI the daughter of John and Dorothy (Ray) Block. She was raised in Couderay and graduated from Winter High School. Jocyne was married to Ben Clements on June 25, 1958 in Pine City, MN. She was the owner and operator of the Buckhorn Bar in Exeland for six years and they owned Clements' Hardware for 18 years. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Exeland.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Jocyne is survived by two daughters, Susan (Denny) Kopras, Exeland, and Sherry (Dave) Samardzich of Bruce; two grandchildren, Conner and Kelsie Kopras; brothers- and sisters-in-law; aunts and uncles; nephews and nieces; and special friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 3 at the First Lutheran Church in Exeland with Rev. Larry Sturgis officiating. Music was provided by organist Mark Bartlett and vocalist Nancy Gerber.
Pallbearers were Norm Rademaker, Dick Veness, Mike Paul, John Villiard, Don Gerber, Jim Gerber and Ed Aspsetter.
Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Couderay.
Ina Crye
Mrs. Ina Crye, Couderay, Dies; Rites Thursday
HAYWARD (Special) - Mrs. Ina Crye, 59, Couderay, died at a local hospital on Sunday.
Born Ina Campbell in Olive Hill, Ky., on March 30, 1903, she came with her parents to North Dakota at the age of 12 and four years later to Birchwood. On May 1, 1922, she married Arthur Crye in Rice Lake. The couple resided at Yarnell until 1933, when they moved to Couderay. She was an active worker in her community. She was a member of the Couderay Presbyterian Church and its ladies aid.
Surviving are her husband; one son, Gerald of Milwaukee; two daughters, Phyllis Donahue of Park Falls, Mrs. Carole Noyes of Poolsville, Md.; four sisters, Mrs. Lulu Crye of Milwaukee, Mrs. Lucretia Madsen, Oregon, Mrs. Ora Stump, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Mildred Busse of Exeland; Six brothers, Perry and Kenneth Campbell of Birchwood, Leonard of Marinette, Louis of Kenova, W. Va., Walter of Bruce and Alvin; six grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Couderay Presbyterian Church, the Rev. James Hervey officiating. Interment will be in the Couderay Cemetery. Friends may call at the Anderson Funeral Chapel from 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Benjamin Max Eckl
Benjamin Max Eckl, age 23, a Korean War veteran who had returned to his home in the town of Couderay in January of this year, was instantly killed in a car accident on Monday morning, April 6, when the car he was driving struck the road bridge south of Radisson on County Road H. His companion, James VanGilder, escaped with serious head cuts and lacerations. He was the only passenger in the car. The accident was investigated by Coroner Lester Anderson and Deputy Sheriff Clyde Williamson.
Benjamin was born in the town of Couderay on July 20, 1930. He attended grade school at Lemington and the first year of high school at Couderay. His second year of high school was at Winter.
On April 26, 1951, he was called for military service. He was sent to Fort Leonard Wood for two months and then to El Paso, Texas, for training in heavy artillery. On Sept. 1, 1951, he went overseas and spent 11 months on the front lines in Korea. He was given the Certificate of Distinction, having served with the 10th Field Artillery in Korea. In October 1952, he returned to Camp Atterbury, Ind., where he was stationed for three months. He was discharged Jan. 26, 1953, and returned to the home of his parents in Couderay.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Eckl of the town of Couderay; one sister, Mrs. Marion Erickson of St. Paul,; four brothers, Joseph W. of Killeen, Texas, John A., Arcadia, Calif., Raymond E. of Las Vegas, Nev., and Norman G. who resides at the home.
The body lay in state at the Anderson Funeral Chapel until Wednesday noon, when it was taken to the family residence. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday morning from St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Couderay, with Rev. Father Lewandowski officiating at the mass. Interment was in the Couderay cemetery with the Couderay American Legion post in charge of the military rites.
Elizabeth Hemminger
Elizabeth A. Hemminger, 48, of Couderay, died at the Indianhead Memorial Hospital at Shell Lake on Sunday, August 3 after a lengthy illness.
Elizabeth Ansley Rice was born February 26, 1932 at Valdosta, Georgia, the daughter of Robert T. and Sadie A. Rice. She married Richard G. Hemminger at Great Falls, Montana, on February 17, 1955. The couple left Montana in 1966 and moved to Winter, Wis., and later to Couderay in 1968. Mrs. Hemminger was employed by the Credit Union at Couderay as a bookkeeper for several years.
Surviving are her husband, Richard; two sons, David R. of Radisson and Edwin A. of Ladysmith; two daughters, Mrs. Edythe M. Hull of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota and Mrs. Patricia P. Clark of Birchwood, Wis.; four grandchildren and her father, Robert Rice of Pearson, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at graveside in Couderay Cemetery in Couderay. Rev. Ken Loomans will officiate. Visitation was at the Anderson Funeral Home in Hayward on Tuesday evening. Casketbearers for Mrs. Hemminger were Norman Argetsinger, Louis Bauer, Fred Ortwig, Lon Seffinga, Robert Weatherhead and Aaron Zesiger.
Eric H. Johnson
Eric H. Johnson, age 69, resident of Couderay, died Friday in Couderay.
He was born Sept. 3, 1903 in Stockholm, Sweden, coming to the United States when a young man. He resided at Grand Forks, North Dakota where he was employed as a semi-truck driver for the Glendenning Company. He was also associated with the Red Wing Farms of Mekinack, North Dakota prior to coming to Sawyer county to make his home. He was a member of the Couderay Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by a sister Ann of Stockholm, Sweden. He wife and young son preceded him in death.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon, 2:00 o'clock, the Couderay Presbyterian Church, Rev. Robert A. Koenig, M.A., B.D., officiating. Interment in the Couderay cemetery. The Koerpel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Martha Metcalf
Martha Metcalf, 71, Hayward, died Friday, May 18 at the Hayward Area Memorial Hospital.
Martha Bernice Sheptick was born Jan. 3, 1930 in Couderay, the daughter of Alex and Sophie Sheptick. She was married to Floyd Metcalf on June 7, 1952 in Couderay. Martha enjoyed polka dancing with Floyd, gardening, and taking care of her grandchildren. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Post #7233.
Martha is survived by her husband, Floyd; four children, Linda (Randy) Stark, Columbia Heights, MN, Gaylene (John) Wendle, Sierra Vista, AZ, Rick Metcalf, St. Cloud, MN, and Audra (Dave) Wilkozek, Hayward; five grandchildren; one brother, Alex Sheptick; and five sisters, Anne Dudzik, Julie Wadas, Helen Drag, Josephine Jamrozik, and Annette Heck.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; and four sisters.
Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, Hayward. Casket bearers were David, Larry, and Mike Jarvis, Dwight Metcalf, and Eugene and Wayne Slayton. Members of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Post #7233 served as honorary bearers.

Beulah Ann Mooney
Ann Mooney, age 80, of Hayward and formerly of Radisson, WI, died Wednesday, October 13, 2004, at the Hayward Area Memorial Hospital.
Beulah Ann Scrimsher was born October 6, 1924, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Otis and Ivy (Handley) Scrimsher. She graduated from Seaman High School in Topeka. Ann was the owner and operator of the Indian Post Resort on the Chippewa Flowage for almost 30 years. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Couderay, particularly its music ministry, for many years.
She is survived by her son, Gary (Carol) Mooney, Eleva, WI; her daughter, Carol Williamson, Black River Falls, WI; two grandsons: Christopher (Melissa) Mooney, Madison, WI and Ryan (Shannon) Mooney, Stevens Point, WI; one granddaughter, Bryn (Travis) Hand, Hayward, WI; and one great granddaughter, Regan Clare Mooney; one sister, Gladys (Arlo) Bell, Lyndon, KS; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Alan.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 16th at the First Presbyterian Church in Couderay with Rev. Dr. Robert Koenig officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening at the Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home and again at the church on Saturday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Couderay. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to First Presbyterian Church.
John Moyer

COUDERAY - Funeral services for John H. Moyer, Couderay, who died Thursday at St. Joseph's hospital in Rice Lake, were held at the home Monday, with burial in the local cemetery. The Rev. W. Wade officiated at the ceremony. Masonic rites were held at the grave.
Mr. Moyer was born at Orangeville, Ill., February 23, 1867. He married Miss Elizabeth Wahl at Earling, Iowa, in 1905, moving to Couderay as one of the early pioneers. He was employed at the Heffelfinger saw-mill and on the railroad, prior to becoming postmaster in 1918, which office he has filled for 22 years, retiring January 31, 1940. Surviving are his wife, four daughters, Mrs. Elmer Severson (Bessie) and Mrs. Al Borrie (Gertrude) of Couderay; Mrs. Hugh McLean (Amanda) of Hauer; Mrs. Victor Carlson (Helen) of Gilmanton, one son, John, Inglewood, Cal., and 11 grandchildren.
Out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral were Mrs. Frank Hartman, George Moyer and John Frankenburger of Orangeville, Ill.; Mrs. Matt Twieler, Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Small of Trego; Arthur Campbell and Mrs. Adolph Robehl, Rice Lake; Elsie Wang and Harold Severson, Hayward; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Severson, Superior; Mrs. Thomas Boury, Winter; Mr. and Mrs. Don McLean and Mr. and Mrs. William Libby of Yarnell.
Chelcie "Red" Overman

Chelcie "Red" Overman, 77, Hayward, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000 at the Hayward Nursing Home, where he had been a resident for the past two months.
Chelcie Daniel Overman was born July 21, 1923 in Couderay, the son of Clyde D. and Anna (Michaelis) Overman. He attended school in Couderay. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the area, including at Pattison Park in Superior. During World War II he was an army military policeman, serving in Europe and in the Pacific. On Nov. 8, 1947 he was united in marriage to Merl Mae Holcomb in Hayward. He worked at the Hayward Nursery for 10 years and then as a custodian at the Hayward Post Office, retiring after 31 years. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Butler-Lindner Post #218 in Hayward and served as its sergeant of arms. He enjoyed wood working, flower gardening and hunting for deer.
He is survived by his wife; five children: sons, Jerry (Kathy), John (Darlene) and Russ, all of Hayward, Jim (Jeri), Drummond, and daughter, Lynn (Mike) Kavanagh, Hayward; ten grandchildren; one great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 13 at the Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home in Hayward with Rev. David Perkins officiating. A visitation was held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Music was provided by Marilyn Loder and Rebecca Iverson. Military rites were accorded by the Hayward Veterans Council. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Hayward.
The honorary bearer was Everette Gaede. Casket bearers were Basil Cline, Don Glessing, Howard Henk, Basil "Chip" Holcomb III, Dale Pederson and Jon Rezarch.
Bernard Rich

Bernard F. Rich, 87, Bernard "Bernie" Rich, 87, Hayward and formerly of Couderay, died Saturday, Nov. 25, at the Hayward Nursing Home.
Bernard Frederic Rich was born July 11, 1913 in Shell Lake, the son of George and Grace (Eastman) Rich. He attended school in Cumberland and at the age of 14 went out and started logging. He was joined in marriage to Myrtle Paulson on Oct. 1, 1938. Bernie and Myrtle moved to Winter, where they farmed and lived until 1945, when they moved to Couderay. They ran a small dairy farm in Couderay and Bernie worked for the Sawyer County Highway Department as a truck driver. He worked 32 years for Sawyer County and retired in 1975. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Couderay, and he liked to fish and hunt.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle; son, Bernard (Diane) Rich, Barrington Hills, IL; three daughters, Jackie Seddon, Hayward, Barbara (Norman) Argetsinger, Couderay and Jeanne (Andy) Timberlake, Hayward; 15 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Mary Kellogg and Shirley Seffinga; one granddaughter, Kimberly Kellogg; and two sisters, Susan Kellberg and Eva Guttke.
A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at the First Presbyterian Church in Couderay with Rev. Dr. Robert Koenig Ph.D. officiating. Visitation was held from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church on Tuesday. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Couderay.
Casket bearers were Keith Argetsinger, Gregory Argetsinger, James Kellogg, Bernie Rich Jr., Doug Seddon, Troy Seffinga and Jesse Walczak.
John Sander

John G. Sander, 62, Rice Lake, and formerly of Couderay, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at his home.
John George Sander was born August 19, 1938 in Radisson, the son of Alfred H. and Luzenia (White) Sander. He graduated form Hayward High School and then attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He moved to the Couderay area and started working as a counciler. Over several years he worked with the LCO Ojibwa School, Alpha House in Menomonee, and the St. Croix Camp as a councilor. He also served for two years in the Hayward National Guard Company B. For the last six years he resided in Rice Lake. He retired from the LCO Human Resources Department in August of 2000. He enjoyed playing golf, baseball, and other outdoor sports. When he was in college he was active in theatre groups and then performed with the Milwaukee Players. Some of the productions he was in were "Oklahoma," "My Fair Lady," and "Little Mary Sunshine."
He is survived by two daughters, Candace Sander, Stevens Point and Kay Cee Sander, Milladore, WI, and their mother, Jackie Schueller; his fiancé, Sonja Olson and her sons, Jason and Eric Flora; five grandchildren; their blended families have been a blessing; three brothers, Alfred, Mike (Terri), both of Couderay, and Robert (Phyllis) of Exeland; five sisters, Dolores Sander and Fran Whitney, both of Couderay, Dorothy Tate, Exeland, Grace Wills, Abrams, WI, and Joy (Hal) Corsette, Crown Point, IN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lawrence "Sonny"; and his son, "little" John.
A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2001 at the Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home in Hayward with Rev. Marvin Wilber officiating. Visitation time was held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday and from 2-3 p.m. on Saturday also at the funeral home. Interment will be at a later time in the Couderay Evergreen Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Eric Flora, Jason Flora, Jim Helsing, James Holmstrom, Larry Sander, and Robert J. Sander.
Terrance Seddon

Terrance Robert Seddon, 60, Hayward, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000 at the Hayward Area Memorial Hospital.
Terry was born Aug. 19, 1940 in Roselle, IL to Hugh and Elizabeth (Letsch) Seddon. After graduation from high school, Terry was employed at Illinois Gas Company. Terry's parents purchased Pat's Landing Resort on the Chippewa Flowage in 1964. Terry moved to Wisconsin in 1966 and was employed at Argentsinger's IGA in Couderay, together with helping his parents with the operation of the resort.
Terry was united in marriage to JoAnn (Jackie) Rich on Sept. 14, 1968 at Couderay.
Terry's father passed away in 1970 and Terry and his wife Jackie continued to help Terry's mother with the business until 1974, at which time Terry and Jackie purchased Pat's Landing and have operated it until the present time.
Terry enjoyed golfing, building model airplanes and snowmobiling. Terry was the treasurer of Sno-Trails Snowmobile Club. He was an active member of many local snowmobile clubs and the Sawyer County Snowmobile Alliance and the Chippewa Flowage Resort Association. He was a member of the Couderay Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife JoAnn (Jackie); one son, Douglas and one daughter, Kari, both of Hayward; two brothers, Hugh of Hayward and David (Donna) of Montello, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ronald.
Visitation was held on Friday, Oct. 20 from 5-8 p.m. at Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. at the Couderay Presbyterian Church in Couderay with visitation an hour before services. Burial was at the Evergreen Cemetery at Couderay.
Casket bearers were Peter Burke, Paul and Bruce Wick, Bob Rentner, John Badagliacco, and Bob Fitzgerald.
Troy Seffinga

Troy D. Seffinga, Waukesha, was born on June 14, 1962 in Hayward, the son of Chester and Shirley (nee Rich). He died Monday, Oct. 8, at home at the age of 39 years. He was a member of St. William Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his mother.
Troy will be sadly missed by his wife, Terri (nee Weber), whom he married on Sept. 3, 1988; his sons, Matthew, Ryan, and Charlie; his father, Chester, of Couderay; his sister, Cindy (Don) Grindheim of Kaukauna, Wis.; and other relatives and friends.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from noon until time of service. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Durand.
Martha Seffinga

Martha M. Seffinga, 84, Hayward, and formerly of Couderay, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000 at the Valley Health Care Center in Hayward.
Martha M. Ruby was born July 31, 1916 in Knox, ND, the daughter of Benjamin and Minnie (Kiesling) Ruby. Her family moved to Delta, WI in 1921 and a few years later moved to Lemington, WI. She was joined in marriage to Robert J. Seffinga on May 10, 1933. They moved to the Couderay area in 1944 and operated a farm. Starting in the mid-1960s she worked for 10 years as a nurse's aide at the Marion Nursing Home in Radisson. After retirement she and her husband moved to Hayward in 1981. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and its ladies aide group, Hayward Homemakers, and was a founding member of the Sawyer County Senior Center.
She is survived by her daughter, Myrtle Hill, Hayward; four sons, Robert (Darlene) Seffinga, Hayward, Chester Seffinga, Couderay, Lon (Frances) Seffinga, Madison, and Helmer "Shorty" (Jean) Seffinga, Leveen, AZ; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sister, Carrie Johnson, Seattle, WA; sister-in-law, Gert Ruby, Lemington; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; infant son; four brothers, Sam, Lou, Fred, and Les; and three sisters, Jess, Mert, and Mable.
A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14 at the First Presbyterian Church in Couderay with Rev. Dr. Robert Koenig, Ph.D officiating. Music was provided by Nancy Gerber and Marie Ellickson. Visitation was held from 4-6 p.m. on Friday at the Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home in Hayward and a half hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Couderay.
Casket bearers were Robert Hill, Scot Seffinga, Spencer Seffinga, Troy Seffinga, and Calvin Seffinga.
Bessie Severson

Funeral services for former Couderay Postmaster, Mrs. Elmer L. (Bessie) Severson, who died at Hayward on Wednesday, Jan. 9, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12 at the United Presbyterian Church, Couderay, Dr. Robert A. Koenig, officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery, Couderay.
Mrs. Severson received her appointment to the Postmaster position in 1940, serving in that capacity until her retirement in 1970. At the time of her death she was a resident of the Hayward Nursing Home.
Born at Earling, Iowa on October 22, 1902, she came to Couderay with her parents, John and Elizabeth Moyer, at the age of two. She attended grade school at Couderay and was a graduate of Hayward High School with the Class of 1921. She was a graduate of teacher's training in Hayward and taught school in Meteor. On April 16, 1924 she was married to Elmer Severson in Duluth.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Aid in Couderay. She was also a member of the Garden Club, "Cou-Ra-Wa," the Homemakers Club, a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary of Couderay, and a fifty-year member of the Royal Neighbors of America.
She is survived by her husband, one son, John L., Covington, La., two daughters, Mrs. Charles "Elizabeth" Balczewski, Exeland, Mrs. Ed "Mary" Maloney, Kenosha; three sisters, Mrs. Allen Boury, Mount Vernon, Wash., Mrs. Amanda McLean and Mrs. Victor Carlson, Stone Lake; one brother, John Moyer, Oak Harbor, Wash.
Pallbearers included John Block, Herbert Block, Chester Poradish, Edward Forrester, Robert Seffinga and Ray Argetsinger. The Anderson Funeral Chapel was in charge of local arrangements.
Elmer Severson
Elmer Severson, 81 of Couderay died at the Luther Hospital of Eau Claire on August 12th. He was born at Hayward on April 2, 1899, the son of Louis and Anna Dwang Severson. He attended Hayward schools and worked in the Hayward area until marrying Bessie L. Moyer on April 16, 1924 at Duluth, MN. The couple lived a short time at MacGregor, MN and Hayward until moving to Couderay in 1929. He began working for the Sawyer County Highway Department in the late 1930s and retired in 1963. He then worked in Couderay as a postal clerk for seven years.
Mr. Severson was a member of the Scandinavian American Fraternity and the Odd Fellows. he was an active member of the Couderay community and a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; infant son; four brothers, Sam, Lou, Fred, and Les; and three sisters, Jess, Mert, and Mable.
Preceded in death by his wife in 1974, he is survived by a son, John of Chicago; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Betty) Balczewski of Exeland, WI, and Mrs. Ed (Mary Lou) Maloney of Kenosha, WI; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was also preceded by two brothers.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 16th at the First Presbyterian Church in Couderay with Rev. Ken Loomans officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Couderay. Music was provided by Martha Bekkedahl. Casket bearers were Bernard Baldridge, Herbert Block, Kenneth Campbell, Earl Carlson, Robert Seffinga and Lester Smith.
Alex Sheptick
Funeral services for Alex Sheptick, 83, were held Friday at 11 a.m. from Saint Mary Magdalene's Catholic Church in Couderay, Celebrant, the Rev. Father Alphonso Zoltowski officiated at the Mass of the Resurrection.
Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Couderay, Wis. Rosary services were held in the Anderson Funeral Chapel in Hayward at 8 p.m. on Thursday evening.
Mr. Sheptick died Wednesday morning at the Hayward Memorial Hospital. He was born in Poland on Dec. 27, 1890 and came to the United States when a young man. He settled in the state of Pennsylvania where he worked in the coal mines. He was married to Sophie Sheptoski in Pennsylvania and the couple came to Couderay to make their home in 1919 where he farmed until his retirement.
He and his wife celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary August 30, 1973.
He was a member of the Saint Mary Magdalene's Catholic Church of Couderay and the Polish National Alliance of Radisson, Wis.
He is survived by his wife; four sons, John of Minneapolis, Alex of Northville, Ill., Joseph of Couderay and Stanley of Hayward; nine daughters, Mrs. Edward (Ann) Dudzik, and Mrs. Chester (Sophie) Rokosz of Chicago, Mrs. Mary Pachowicz, Madison, Wis., Mrs. Edward (Julia) Wadds, Highbridge, New Jersey, Mrs. Casmir (Helen) Drag, Elmwood Park, Ill., Mrs. Alvin (Stella) Kutz, Arlington Heights, Ill., Mrs. John (Josephine) Jamracik, Des Plaines, Ill., and Mrs. Floyd (Martha) Metcalf, Hayward, and Mrs. Bruce (Annette) Patterson, Isanti, Minnesota; 33 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren. One daughter preceded in death.
Pallbearers were Alvin Kutz, Bruce Patterson, Casey Drag, Ed Wadds, John Jamrozek and Ed. Dudzik.
Joseph Sheptick

Joseph Sheptick, 67, Couderay, died Thursday, Nov. 23 at the Hayward Area Memorial Hospital.
Joseph Sheptick was born Dec. 22, 1932 in Couderay, the son of the late Alex and Sophia (Sheptoskie) Sheptick. Joe married Ruth Markman in Hayward, who died on May 22, 1983.
Joe is survived by one brother, Alex (Jackie) Sheptick, Northlake City, IL; seven sisters, Martha (Floyd) Metcalf, Hayward, Ann (Ed) Dudzik, Chicago, Helen (Casey) Drag, Plainfield, IL, Annette (Phil) Heck, Cedar, MN, Stella (Alvin) Kutz, Rola, MO, and Josephine Jamorizk and Julie Wadas, both of Des Plaines, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three sisters; and two brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 27 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Radisson. Father Vincent Bromley officiated. Visitation was one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Couderay.
Dr. Joseph S. 'Doc' Stevens

HAYWARD (Special) - Dr. Joseph S. Stevens, 69, a former resident of Chicago, died at his home on Chief Lake at Couderay on Monday.
He was born on Feb. 13, 1896 in Poland. When a young man he came to Chicago, where he attended schools. He was a graduate of Northwestern University, becoming a doctor of dentistry.
Dr. Stevens started his practice in Chicago and on Feb. 21, 1916, enlisted in the United States Army and became a private first class in the 122nd Field Artillery, Battery A. He served overseas in all of the major battles and was discharged at Camp Grant, Ill., on July 7, 1919.
Dr. Stevens was married to Mary P. Soltis on Oct. 6, 1934 in Chicago. In 1939 he retired from practice and moved with his family to Couderay, where they established their home and a business known as Stevens Resort on Chief Lake.
Survivors besides his wife include a daughter, Ruth, Hayward; a son, Robert, at Couderay; a brother, the Rev. Fr. Wojniak in Formosa; a grand-daughter, Mary Jean Melchert. A daughter, Carol Melchert, preceded him in death on Jan. 13, 1962.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Anderson Funeral Home. The Rev. Fr. Leonard Lewandowski will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Couderay. There will be a recitation of the Rosary at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Karolina Styskal
Funeral services for Karolina Styskal of Couderay were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday in St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church at Couderay, Rev. Fr. Francis Pakosta was the celebrant. Interment was in the Couderay Cemetery. Casket bearers were Stephen Atherton, Jr., Gerald Atherton, David Atherton, Dale Scharlau, Erwin Reindl and Cletus Melchoir. Visitation was at the Anderson Funeral Home on Thursday evening with a Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m.
Karolina Stribrnska was born in Czechoslovakia on October 25, 1895, the daughter of Joseph and Elenora Beranek Stribrnska. She had been a resident of Couderay since 1949. Her husband, Robert, preceded her in death in 1965 and her son, Frank, in 1977.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Bertha) Ekl of Couderay and Ludmila Slamova of Czechoslovakia; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; two sisters, Bertha Skulinek and Elenora Hradecka, both of Czechoslovakia.
Merritt Warner

Merritt Warner, Couderay, Dies; Rites Saturday
HAYWARD (Special) - Merritt Warner, 74, Couderay, died in the Shell Lake Hospital on Wednesday.
He was born in Elroy on May 31, 1890. He attended schools there and later was employed in West Allis from 1912 to 1932, when he came to Couderay. He served as town clerk in Couderay at the time of his death and had been in that office since 1937. He served on the school board until the consolidation with the Winter school in 1962.
Surviving are his wife, Violet; four sons, Charles of Couderay, Dale and Douglas of Milwaukee, David of Kenosha; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Rampacek, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Marilyn Spreckles of Couderay; one brother, Harold of New Lisbon; one sister, Mrs. Ed Flora of West Allis; several grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Couderay Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Gunderson officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Couderay in the spring. Friends may call at the Anderson Funeral Home at Hayward from 3 p.m. Friday.
